Weekend Getaway

Weekend Getaway.

Hunters often get a bad reputation. A lot of people don’t understand how you could possibly get gratification over taking an animal’s life. You will often get comments as a hunter like that is sickening or that is demented. A big argument is why do you need to kill an animal when you can go to the supermarket and have a whole selection of meats. I’m not going to get into the grueling details of why ethical hunting is necessary for the preservation of wildlife. Just why I choose to do it.

I do go to the store and buy produce. It’s not about needing the meat. I could absolutely live without hunting and spend my weekends holed up in my room playing videogames or choose to go out and party. When I was younger, I struggled with finding myself. And I feel that a lot of people live their whole lives without really finding out what gives them the optimum enjoyment out of life. At a young age I found out that the outdoors made me happy. That was all I could think about. The outdoors was my purpose in life.

There is a deeper meaning to why I want alone time in the woods. Why I would choose to isolate myself in the middle of nowhere. I do it to get away. When I am in school I think about new fishing spots, but more than anything I think about the next time I can get out into one of my tr stands. I know that if I can stick it out at school or work that the time will come that I can get back into the woods. I live for the alone time.

When the bell rings on Friday during hunting season I find solace. Not because I don’t have to be at school anymore but because I know that it is only a matter of time until I’m back in the woods. When I begin climbing into my stand it is as though there is a weight lifted off my shoulders. I have imagined the ground as my responsibilities and everyone I don’t want to e around. When I am in the stand everything can wait. It is time alone. When I look fifteen feet down it is like life can’t bring me down because I’m so high up.

It started as a fun hobby. Now it’s a lifestyle.

Reflection

I think when most people are asked about what kinds of personality they have and what type of person they are, they would often go straight to what their hobbies are. People may say things such as “well I paint, I’m artistic” or “I’m an outdoorsman” or, perhaps “I’m creative”. Now what draws people to their hobbies I think helps define their personality’s. they could choose to be a sports player because they like the added attention or could even choose to go on hikes because they like the complete solitude. I believe people assume their personality’s to quickly is because people often don’t put enough thought into them.

You could tell how many people in the class did not put much thought into their results when we all took those personality tests. People were laughing at the test and were not putting much stock into it. But there is an interesting theory that you can determine someone’s core beliefs with a few questions on the internet. But if you looked closely the responses were for the most part quite accurate from the students in our class. Although the broader groups varied a little. The people in each distinct personality type were for the most part similar.

I personally think that your personality means everything. You should not try to hide who you are, the world needs all types of people. It sounds cliché but if there were only extroverts the world would be lightly chaotic, only introverts and no one would speak up. It is important to embrace who you are. It is not easy to figure out who you are deep down, but once you do, you just have to roll with it.

Picture.

                                                                  Artist statement.

I chose to take a picture out of my tree stand to go along with my flash fiction. In my flash fiction I talk about how hunting helps me get away and clear my head. I chose the title: “Weekend Getaway” because when I go hunting, we have a deer camp set up. I know that when I go to deer camp I can chill out and not have to worry about anything other than my friends and hunting.  I wrote my reflection over personality because that was what I found the most interesting out of all the options.

Comments

  1. Mark, I really like everything about your flash fiction and reflection. It was very easy to connect to and I feel a similar way when I go out hunting as well and just being able to push everything else in your life aside to go hunt for the weekend. I also strongly agree with this statement you made, "You should not try to hide who you are, the world needs all types of people."

  2. i like when you said "You should not try to hide who you are, the world needs all types of people" I agree with this because everyone is unique. I also liked how you showed how it connects to you when you were young you struggled to find yourself.

  3. I really liked your flash fiction it was easy to connect to, when I go hunting I feel the same way it just feels like you don't have anything else to worry about except what is going on right in front of you.

  4. As someone who opposes hunting, I still really like the way you described how hunting fits into your life and personality, and how it makes you happier to just be out there doing something you love to do.

  5. Your picture is cool and i can relate because i like to hunt as well. I like how well thought out it was and your message about how hunting is a part of your life instead of being portrayed as bad.

  7. I really feel for your piece mark! not everyone can understand the serenity from just sitting in a stand on a cold fall day while the only noises are the creek and your icy breath; it is a beautiful feeling and it isn't everyone's place to understand! you really went into depth on how amazing it is just to be alone and hunt. and the patience really does pay off when you get that big 8 pointer like ya did! great piece mark!
