Overwhelmed

Flash Fiction
You don’t think your ready to move out or grow up. You finally realize just how difficult life is actually going to be.
You think you’ve been living in a perfect world, WAKE UP, it’s just a dream. Now your kind of scared thinking about
college and what your next steps going to be. You know in your mind that your current friends might not be the best
influence on you. Your very stressed out and wish you could stay a teen forever, never having to grow up. It would be so
cool if Never-Land actually existed because then you wouldn’t have to grow up. But then you realize that’s just wishful thinking. You know you need to start acting your age. Sometimes you wish you could trade places with your younger sister. Her life seems so much easier. You don’t
know what you want to be or what you want to do with your life. She already has pretty much everything planned out.
She also has better grades than you so you feel stupid sometimes. In general you wish you could just be like her. Your
mother pressures you to get good grades, but you have like no motivation. You sometimes you wish you were your cat.
So you could do whatever the hell you wanted, whenever you wanted to. Not having to worry about college or life in
general, except getting food and shelter.
But now your getting off track. You just sometimes hate life in general, but are having a hard time turning it around. You know you shouldn’t be thinking this but you sometimes wish you were born with a different mother. If she was just more relaxed and not so uptight about everything her kids might not hate her as much. Now this isn’t so much about college and growing up, but just your life and the parts you hate. You wish you were born into a different time era. Where things might be easier, but life’s never that easy, it wants you to struggle at every possible moment.

Artist Statement
I chose the image I did because to me that’s how I pictured a girl would look if she was overwhelmed by life.
The story here is of a girl who is overwhelmed by the choices she has to make. She doesn’t really know what she wants
to do in life yet, but the time is getting closer to where she’ll have to make a decision. She lost in an ever changing world.
Her mother is probable the thing that stresses her out the most because her moms so strict and is pushing her to get good
grades. She feels like she has no freedoms, but that’s probably not entirely true. The image just gives you a visual image
of what the text is mainly focusing on. The struggles of a teenage girl new to adulthood, she feels like the weight of the
world is on her shoulders. They give each other power because the image enhances the text, so you can relate more.
Some people better understand something when they have a clear image of what it is.

Reflection
I have come to believe that personalities can change over time if the person strongly wishes to change. I believe
I have an ever changing personality because with different people I have a different attitudes/faces. We have total control
over shaping our identities because it’s a part of us. It’s up to us on how we want to be shaped. Although in some cases
the choices your parents make can impact you as a person or the positions we’re stuck in. In the snowball activity we
did in class the people given a position in the back had a harder time achieving the goal. But they still tried with what they
were given. Certain people aren’t given many choices in life or opportunities to make a better life for themselves, but they
work with what they have. There’s always another path than the one your taking. Personalities change everyday because
people grow or learn something new about themselves almost everyday. Personalities are never a set in stone kind of deal,
you are who you are and it’s up to you to decide if you want to change. I feel like nobody really knows who they are, they just
come up with a personality that they think fits them. An example is the personality tests we took in class that said you were an
adventurer, Mediator, or a Democrat (Personality Test). People have created lots of test that tell you “your personality”.
It might sound like you, but that’s just because they know a lot of people like you. They say “if you have this kind of personality that
means you have these personality traits.” Okay, I get that some people know who they are and they’re personalities rarely
change, but there’s a small percent of them out there. People can also deceive themselves into thinking that and therefore
giving off fake energy waves.
We also see the struggles teens face today in the video "$100 Race" and how some are privileged and some aren't. It really
shows how we don't think much about what we are given by our parents. All the thinking we don't think much about
could mean a lot to someone in the way back off the race to get on top. It says "noting you have done has put you
in the lead you have right now" (Race). "We don't want to realize that we've been given a head start but the reality is we
have now. The reality is this was a fair race and everybody was back on that line. I guarantee you some of these black dudes
will smoke all of you and it's only because you have this big of a head start that you're possibly going to win this race
called life that is a picture of lie ladies and gentlemen" (Race). What he says has so much truth in it that it's hard to
grasp the full reality of it. He bring to life an issues that nobody really thinks about or know about.
In the Personality Myth, Dan said "people judged me before they even got to know me" (Personality). I would say that's
almost 100% true because we see people doing that all the time as they walk down the sidewalk or in a grocery store. We
do it to but it's always easier to judge other people than ourselves. A comment said in the Podcast by Walter kind of
annoyed me because I don't agree with that at all. He said, "A criminal is a criminal it doesn't change over time" (Personality)
It's just a label people put on each other to help them know what that person is like. The label might not even
be right, but it's stuck there and know matter how hard you try you can't get it off or change it.

  1. I can relate with all of the pressure my parents put on me, and it gets really overwhelming sometimes. I too have often thought about what it would be like if I was born in a different era, in a different house, and traded lives with my cat. I really love the different fonts and colors you used in your flash fiction, it really emphasized those parts in grey for me. Your flash fiction felt really genuine, and really entertaining at some parts to read. I like your image, but I do have one suggestion for it. I would have played around with the contrast (the shadows and highlights) in your image. I feel like more emphasized shadows over your shoulders would give a clearer message in your image. But I still think the image is great!

  2. I really liked how you made the example of Neverland in your flash fiction piece - I just thought it was a good example of never growing up. High School is an overwhelming place, it's full of teen angst and preparing for our futures that we really don't know what is in store for us. I think your message in your piece can relate to most teens today, we're pressured to do good in school and held with no freedom like generations before us. I thought your last statement was pretty interesting as well, about wanting to be born in a different era. It caught my eye the most because it's something I've said many times myself. It's as if our generation was never given a chance from the start, having high expectations with the technology and things we were given to help us be better. But, we didn't ask for these things, we didn't ask to be put on a pedestal of high expectations from the adults around us yet we're still stressed and depressed and all people care about are the statistics.
