Passions

You were always told to enjoy it while it lasts. You're going to want it back. You ARE going to miss it: “Life's too short.” Don't let it all pass by in the blink of an eye. This is a time you’ll never get back. Don't just sit there and let your life role 1000 mph around you.

Take everything in. Let your passions define who you are. Surround yourself with the means that you enjoy. You tell yourself to listen but you know you need to be true to yourself. You know what YOU know. You do it different and out of everything you've learned, you take it all in. You’re told that life's too short, but recently you’ve learned that life's not short. You just have to do more.

Artist Statement:
The overall story of the portrait is trying to tell is about life and how people (parents, counselors, teachers) say that you're going to miss high school and that life is too short. Which is true, in a sense, but from my perspective, I've learned that life is not short if you do things you enjoy (pursue what you want to pursue in life) and surround yourself with the people that you love and enjoy to spend your time with. The focus motion filter is suppose represent my life and how everything is moving really fast and i'm the middle of it trying to live my best life. On top of the motion filter, I added a color filter that puts the surrounding colors on top of the main focus (me sitting on the truck) to show that the people and activities I surround myself with define who I am. The Jeep on the right is a representation of friends, since that's my friends jeep. The vehicles in the picture are “flexing’ up on a ramp That represents the whole “do what you want to do” or the “do it different than other people” because honestly, who does that with their vehicles? The windows are down which that represents freedom and going out and being different and by letting other people in to make you happy, which defines my personality and keeps my perspectives consistent every day. I chose to have a picture like this and to not be dressed up since the point of the portrait is to surround yourself with people you enjoy and since I'm wearing a cut off and shorts, it shows that I am comfortable with them and that means I like doing what i like. The overall setting is in the woods, at a friends house. I really love the outdoors so it fits my personality perfectly. The relationship between the image and the text is that the image is suppose to represent experiences. The first stanza is suppose to be the “they say” and the second is suppose to be the “I say”. I'm hearing out what authority has to say about life and perspectives when it comes to my current and post high school life and the giving myself the “pep talk” in second person. I used capitalization on the words “you” and “are” to be able to show emphasis on how much I wanted to show that it was a “pep talk” to myself and to show that “I know what I know”. I used punctuation and shorter sentences to emphasize the use of diction and keeping the statements small but meaningful. The colors represent the objects and people around me paint the image of which is my personality.

They/I say

Parents with kids who are students try to push their kids to take part in as many activities as possible. They always say its for the best but in reality it's never what their kids really want to be. Generally, parents push their kids to pursue their own parent generation perspective on what they think their kids should do. They say they know what their talking about and that its the same as it was when they were looking for a job or a school to go to after high school. Even in high school parents are pushing kids to pursue in what they themselves with their kid to do.
In the podcast, I'm right, You're wrong, Shankar Vedantam informs us on how the relation of vaccines and autism has had a negative outlook for the generation of parents with young children. He explains how parents are, “bullheaded” ("Right") and states, “It is logical for them to block all new information coming in.” ("Right") Vedantam claims that not only is this happening with just the vaccines, but with all aspects of personality bias in the current generation of parents. All of Vedatams claims are backed up with examples that have facts, and show that parents are too keen to believe everything they hear and once they hear something, every other perspective is blocked out. That being, a perfect relation between the, “I'm right, You're wrong” title. Vedantam says that: “if people are afraid, we should address that.” ("Right") and this shows Vedantam is wanting parents and upcoming parents to become more open and less willing to conform to one perspective. After all of this debate, Vedantam is informing others that people need to expand their knowledge on the issue of conforming to potentially false information and sway away from confirmation bias by looking beyond what they already know and build off of that to become more educated. This being a reason to not conform and be open to their kids ideas and wants on what they pursue in their life. This leads to the podcast, The Personality Myth. In the article, the speaker makes claims such as, “attitudes change but personality doesn't”, ("Personality") and “situations determine how we behave, not character. ("Personality") This is saying that although parents might let their kid do something, they still have the same personality bias as they did before. An attitude on the subject of letting their kids do what makes them happy can be rough when they want the stereotypical, “good kid” ("Personality"). The speaker also makes a claim that ,“situations determine how we behave, not character.” ("Personality") He believes that your experiences and the people you surround yourself with defines your character and shapes your personality which leads to personality bias.
This unit, I have taken in concepts to shape my ideas on personality bias, how my identities influence the choices I make, and how my identity impacts the relationships in my life. Relating to my portrait, I described how the people who I surround myself with paints my personality and how I act when it comes to the social and personal aspects of my life. The colors each represent a piece of the puzzle to my personality to form a completely unordinary picture which is my personality. These pieces lead to personality bias by showing that I tend to stick with the people I surround myself with, who have the same general beliefs as I do, and share the same personality traits as I do. I've come to believe that this is a the reason why I have this type of personality bias because this is the way I’ve grown up, and it leads to a fun and healthy life. I believe that I take pieces of wisdom from each and every activity, and each person I surround myself with to shape myself into the person I am today.

  1. Good Job! I think that your picture is really cool in the way that you edited it and you can tell that it truly represents you. Your writing is also very detailed and personal. I can relate to your flash fiction because I have also had people tell me to live in the moment.

  4. Your portrait is super eye-catching and I sympathize with your words. Life is short when you rush through it. But if you stop and enjoy the time you have, you'll leave this earth satisfied! The little details you pointed out in your artist statement amazed me. It seems as if every little thing in this picture was intentional and had meaning to you. Bravo!

  6. Timmerman:

There is one consistent theme throughout your piece and that considers what it takes to achieve balance. You describe a life that is "fun and healthy" and that seems to be a mix of taking care of important business and making sure you take the time to take your time. It makes a lot of sense know that we've gotten to know you a little bit more.

Your image was visually appealing and well thought-out. Each of the effects you chose helped to support the idea you were trying to get across and it help build meaning throughout the piece. It is hard to find a way to make each of the three parts work together cohesively and you tried to take that on. Nice work.

    Thanks for your thoughts.
