it's a sad world- Abby Farrington

It’s a sad world
Flash fiction:
It’s a smile. REALITY. It’s not.
Artist statement:
I chose to do a six-word story with this piece because using just six words the intensity and impact it can have on the reader is huge. I wanted to do that effect with the use of punctuation and capitalization. While tying it into my picture where my picture is simple but has an impact. From what you see is a smile from the paper cut out. Then the reality is its not. The paper smile is covering the sadness and pain I’m hiding underneath the smile that’s shown and put on. I wanted to show the kind of personality I have in my story and picture. When the viewer sees my picture, I want them to know why I was crying, but then why there’s a smile. Its because of my personally, I keep my emotions inside so even on my worst days, you can see me with a smile and think everything is fine. That smile is hiding my emotions. I do this because I don’t want my sad or down emotion to ruin someone’s day, so I laugh and smile even when I don’t feel the same way I’m showing myself as.
I chose to do minor edits on my photo because I didn’t want to take away from the message of the picture itself. I put a filter on it that makes it look colder and the black mascara lines more intense. To me, the filter shows the intensity through small things like my 6-word story, and how simple the picture is. The filter was just one change but brought more to how the picture can look.
Bias
While talking about biases, people can have different views on it. Some say with biases, they’re stories we make up about people before even knowing who they are. We all judge a book by its cover and that should be put to an end and step into a person’s life and get to know them before making your opinion.
In the class we looked at many different texts, ted talks, documentaries, and outside sources. In the ted talk by Verna Meyers called “how do we overcome bias? Walk boldly toward them” was one example that stood out to me because it caused myself to take a step back and think which I find important. The things she said in the talk had so much power, tone, and was overall beautiful. Verna said: “go against stereotypes” it was short but had a purpose within the three words. Walk towards the stereotype and break it. Another thing said in the Ted talk was “I learned on a bias I didn’t even know I had” we have so much power that we make ourselves think about something that someone else though for us. We have the power to form opinions but we, as a society, have the power to change how we see color. So, what’s holding us back from going against societies bias on people?why don’t we treat each other equally and with the respect we deserve? I believe biases are just an opinion made up in our minds. Today we are all so quick to judge that we never take the time to put ourselves into someone’s shoes and just make an opinion on the spot. What can we do to make it an equal playing field in today’s world and no be bystanders, but advocates who have a voice? I’ve seen so many people be dragged down by others, put down, bullied, just because of who they are. I’ve also been in the victim’s shoes just because I hide my emotions and not speak about them. It was taken to social media where I was talked about online for basically who I am and how I act. I can’t change who I am and how I act just so I can be accepted by someone’s point of view. I shouldn’t have to change to make someone happy. The saddest part is, she was my best friend and I trusted her for years. That girl never put herself in my shoes on why I hide my emotions. She just went with what she thinks is right so then I must do what she thinks is right to be accepted by her bias. We all can love each other and just know we are different and its okay to be different. That’s who we are.
i understand where you were going with your 6 word story. In reality things can go downhill and mess us up on our path to a good life. on the other hand, we have our own perspective of the world. Some are positive, some can be negative. great work on describing the meaning of some people when they smile. i can relate to this clearly.
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to hide behind a fake smile or a mask of something that's not the truth. I've experienced it firsthand. With bouts of depression that last for days, weeks, even months, it's never easy and it will never get easier. It takes a certain kind of strength to tell someone about what you're going through and ask them for help. If they really care about you, they'll stop at nothing to see that you'll pull through and get better. True happiness is something we all desire. The little things and the people that make you happy is when we can see what true happiness is like. You and I both know that the people in Protégé and the other show choirs are a good family to be with and have amazing people that care about their choir family. After joining this year, I leave every rehearsal feeling way happier than I did during the day. You make that happen. All of you do and I'm grateful to be a part of something where everybody cares for one another.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your memoir and how easy it can be to relate to at times...lots of people feel like that on some days especially when juggling school every day and bigger issues.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about having only 6 words for your flash fiction making a big impact, I think it said a lot for 6 words. I though you described why you used the picture well. I feel like I also, on my bad days, hide my sadness with a smile because I don't want to worry anyone or have them as me what's wrong because I really don't want to explain it. So I can relate to your piece and thought it was well explained.
ReplyDeleteVerna said: “go against stereotypes” it was short but had a purpose within the three words. I completely agree with this statement because you don't have to associate yourself with stereotypes and you can be your own person.
ReplyDeleteI like how both your flash fiction and the picture have bigger meanings then they seem to have.
ReplyDeletei feel like reading this i have a better understanding of you. i know how some may think they really know you but deep down they don't know the emotions you go through so i understand.
ReplyDeleteI really understand what it's like to hide all of the pain inside with a fake smile. The flash fiction really hit home and hard for me. I love how you used white paper over your mouth to emphasize how the smile is not natural, it is forced. I really like the cool tones in your portrait, it really gives a deep feeling.
ReplyDeleteI understand your story a lot, I can relate to it too. I put on a fake smile a lot, but you still see me smiling, laughing, and happy... but deep down inside you see the hurt in me and the fake smile I sometimes have to show. that was deep and I like how you were brave enough to speak your thoughts and how you are feeling.
ReplyDeleteSociety has a way about expressing emotions; it is not allowed. We must always be seen as happy and bright, or we are seen as edgy or problematic. However, your picture and flash fiction emphasized the importance of being able to share how you truly feel, against what others say or think. Thank you for sharing. :)
ReplyDeleteI used to hide my emotions for a couple years too and I feel like I can connect with this. Being judge is never a good feeling and I always feel like I'm being judge for actions, but I notice myself sometimes judging too and I try to stop it. Your flash fiction and picture get what you wanted across to the reader in an amazing way. I really loved how you did the photo edits too, very little but powerful. Your flash fiction is something I'm most likely going to remember because I can so easily connect to it. I hope you start sharing more often and I hope it goes well and amazing if you do start sharing. Be yourself and be amazing, you won't always bring someone's day down.
ReplyDeleteI completely relate to hiding how you feel because you don't want to put that burden on someone else. That you feel like putting on that fake smile is what you have to do even when you know on the inside that you're not okay. That it's easier to tell people you're fine than risking ruining someone's day with your sadness. I loved that you chose just using 6 words because I agree that it has a huge impact.

I can definitely relate to hiding your feelings from everyone. Sometimes smiling is easier than explaining why you're sad and I mean everyone likes easy right? So just smiling all the time is easy and people don't ask questions that upset you more but also, it makes you feel better when you talk about things, for me anyways. I just really likes the way your 6 word story is, the way you used punctuation and when you capitalized REALITY. It was very very good!!
ReplyDeletethat's amazing in general Abby! The flash fic is powerful and amazing, and the pic runs with it amazingly and you brought the whole thing home after the author note and the they say.
ReplyDeleteGirl this was so deep!! you had a really good message behind it and it's something not a lot of people talk about. Hiding feels can get really hard and it's not easy to do, but sometimes you have to keep smiling while you're crying. I liked how you chose to do the 6 words for flash fiction, because it's not easy to write your feelings down in 6 words, and for people to understand. But you did and many can understand it.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the creative way you decided to portray your flash fiction with your picture! Also what is mirror editing? I relate to the feeling of putting on a fake smile and acting happy, but in reality feeling so down and not wanting to do anything. I'm always here for you!<3
ReplyDeleteI think what you were going for in your flash fiction, an impactful message, was accomplished. It is very simple yet very beautiful in many ways. The use of capitalization and punctuation added the perfect touch for what you were going for.
ReplyDeletei like how you did your flash fiction with the REALITY in all caps. It shows that your showing emotion about how people put on fake smiles just to get through the day and no one would know what they're going through.
ReplyDeletei think a lot of people can relate to feeling like they have to pretend to be happy. some days i gotta do that too
ReplyDeleteI really like how you use only 6 words to create a powerful message that ties in perfectly with your image. Having the school in the background as a symbol of the place that can be a cause of your sadness is a great touch, even if it was unintentional.
ReplyDeleteYour TS/IS is really well written and I think could be easily understood by people, even though it talks about deep and complicated topics.
Your picture grabbed my attention! I loved how well it went with your six word story. good work
ReplyDeleteThose 6 words had a real impact on me because it's so true. People smile but in reality they don't want to be smiling, they're just trying to hide it. Your picture was a creative way to represent your flash fiction.

ReplyDeleteI like how everything appears well thought out and prepared, it shows your focus on the project.
