Flash Fiction
Spread love as flowers do seeds…
Artist Statement
Both my flash fiction piece and portrait express putting kindness into the world: through the words that come out of my mouth (represented by the flowers), and the positive impact they can “spread” to others. The absence of clothing in the photo portrays the world’s obsession with material items; your worth is measured in your words and actions, not how much money you spent on your outfit. Our society today is more self serving than ever, and we have forgotten the importance of treating other people with kindness.
I remember being told from a young age, “if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.”( I’m certain my kindergarten teacher was the most inspirational figure of my childhood). Being an older sister, i learned early on that everything i said would end up in her vocabulary. I always had motivation for treating people with kindness, not just because i knew it was morally right, but because i needed my little sister to know that too.Today this saying has become part of my core beliefs. Little instances of kindness sometimes seem less meaningful in that moment, but they all add up in the long run. Being thoughtful and understanding of others could not only help their attitude, but my own as well. I believe kindness is contagious.
Reflection (they say/ I say)
So far this year i have learned about personality from many different perspectives. I was introduced to ideas such as unconscious bias, people's personality ‘types’, and the big theories as to how our personalities ‘work’ from Freud, Maslow, and Jung. I’ve also come to some conclusions regarding personality- especially about myself. Although personalities can sometimes fall into categories, i feel as though we are all much more complex, and our personalities are always changing throughout our lives.
It is often said, “we are who we are” and people never change. However it is unimaginable that the person we will be ten or twenty years from now will be the same as who we are today. A combination of all the places, people, and experiences of our lives are what makes us...well, ‘us’. If we are constantly learning and experiencing things, our personalities are bound to evolve in one way or another. There are many quizzes and questionnaires today that claim to show you who you truly are and the details of your personality.
One personality test stands out though, It's called the Marshmallow personality test, created by Walter Mischel. Its premise is that by giving a child one task- to wait before eating the mallow- you could then decipher how they will behave and think in school, in a future career, and for the rest of their lives. One moment could show the concrete personality one would have in all aspects of their life. Experiments like Mischel's are interesting theoretically, but certainly not proven facts, and they leave quite a few holes. In an Invisibilia Podcast titled ‘The Personality Myth’, Lee Ross, a famous Stanford psychologist who read Walter Mischel's book about personality, explains his own theory. According to Ross, ‘consistency in everyday life is because of the power of the situation’, he believes that people's behavior is due to their current circumstances, rather than a reflection of who they are on the inside.
Before this year, i had a fixed idea of what personality was. I assumed that everyone was exactly who they’d always be, no two ways about it. But from my perspectives class and the sources we've read and listened to about personality and bias, i now see differently. I agree mostly with Ross, and actually find more examples that point toward his fluctuating personality theory. Peoples thoughts and emotions are constantly developing, and our minds are always absorbing new information. I believe anyone can relate this to their own lives: whether it be from a bad breakup or possibly a small random act of kindness, something we experienced changed our personality a bit, which overtime makes a new person (metaphorically).
The fact that people have many changeable layers to their personality, instead of one fixed identity is a hard pill to swallow. Many in our culture choose to reject this possibility because it isn't as secure as theories like Mischel's. But, as long as we have even the slightest control of our current surroundings, we have the ability to change parts of our personality for the better, as we should. By transforming ourselves little by little, the kindness you spread will inevitably reach others.
I really like how you used your portrait to interpret spreading kindness. It is some cool symbolism with the flower that not many would think of.
ReplyDeletei like the editing on the picture. it's very colorful and meaningful from the flower to the little bit of rainbow
ReplyDeleteSince you talk about using language to spread joy it's fitting that you have a flower in your mouth. The rainbow that's to the right of your head also helps the image and emphasized that you want to spread happiness. I'm not sure if your used a filter but the color seemed to pop and make the world look bright.
DeleteI really respect what you're artist statement was saying about your portrait and flash fiction, as i personally can relate to it because my parents told me the same things growing up about the world not having enough room in it for hate, so instead fill it with kindness.
DeleteYou're writing overall is amazing. I really like the meaning behind your portrait and your flash fiction. The symbolism in your photo is something I wouldn't have ever thought of, especially with the materialism aspect and the flower in your mouth. You have a creative mind.
ReplyDeleteHey Shelby it's Ethan. I think your piece is something all of us as people in a functioning society, and especially as the future workforce, need to remember. your picture in itself speaks a great message that we need to forget about all the material items and remember that what truly brings our society together is the love and kindness we spread to those around us. I love the way you used the flower in your mouth to represent your growth as a human and the seeds are to represent you spreading that love and growth to those around you! I've known ya for a bit and I do see that in you! very impressed with you kiddo!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your project and how you decided to interpret it. Your portrait is so gorgeous and I love how beautifully your flash fiction paired with it. It is such a feel-good piece and I think everyone would benefit seeing this. This is so amazing and creative!
ReplyDeleteI really like the representation you did in your photo, and how you connected it with your artist statement. One part espically that I liked was when you talked about material items, and how that does show your self worth. I thought that was a really unique message and something many can relate too.
ReplyDeleteI really liked how your flash fiction and picture went together. I love the 6 word story because it was simple but spoke more words. I feel the message you're sending is a message that we all should kind of follow and always be reminded of!
ReplyDeleteI like how you compared seeds of a flower spreading to how kindness should be spread. Also, are you saying people with material items can't be a kind spreading person?
ReplyDeleteI love how you did the photo, it was simiplistic yet powerful. and we have the same idea about personality so that's pretty cool if you ask me.
ReplyDeleteI love the picture you used behind it having the flower and the color of it stick out most out of everything. I liked reading about you, your artist statement and story in general was interesting and I loved how it all tied back together.
ReplyDeleteyour picture look so beautiful and it also shows connection between your picture and flash fiction. you also talk about being a older sister and i also have younger and i can relate to you about what you have said about being older.
ReplyDeleteYour picture really stood out to me. It is very creative and cool. I also love the way that your artist statement is about kindness and you kept it detailed but still to the point. I think you did a super good job on this project. :)
ReplyDeletei liked your argument for fluctuating personality and i agree that personality is not concrete. i also thought it was smart to show theories against it so it shows you looked at both sides .
ReplyDeleteYour picture is so beautiful! I really like how your flash fiction really makes the flower meaningful. The artist statement really made it all make sense. How you said that it was "expressing kindness" make me think way harder about your piece. You did a really great job and it was a very well written piece.
ReplyDeleteI really like the theme of spreading kindness for your project. I think in todays world people forget how far a simple compliment can go. By comparing spreading kindness to seeds and flowers, it creates a visual picture in my head of the seeds being planted in somebody's mind and then growing into beautiful flowers that result in happiness inside that person. The way you describe how from a young age you learned that it is so important to be kind because your sister will follow in your steps made me so happy because that is really cool that you are such a good role model for your sister. Your portrait connects really well with your flash fiction because it literally shows the beautiful flowers of words coming out of your mouth. What other things made your kindergarten teacher so inspirational? Great job on this project!
ReplyDeleteThe meaning behind this is wonderful and I love that you base your life on kindness. I'd like to know why you represent kindness with nature specifically. Is it because of the innocence in nature? Or is it solely because flowers spread seeds? I also like how you went deeper into why you didn't have clothing showing in the image however I don't feel like it connects to the flash fiction. Either way it all has a good meaning.
ReplyDeleteObviously this is a popular piece to choose because it is something that stands out to multiple people. The picture is bright and how you explained it in only 6 words was great. The flash fiction is great, I loved the message and how it worked well with your picture. I also wrote on how people believe that personalities don't change and I don't believe that is true. Overall really great piece!
ReplyDeleteI really liked your flash fiction and your picture how well they matched each other. also, you did well at explaining your self portrait. you did a great job.
ReplyDeletei love the meaning of the flower and kindness from you and your words.
ReplyDeleteYour picture and flash fiction are so beautiful. I really like the meaning behind them and how they tie together. I like how you had the flower in your mouth to represent the kindness coming out.
ReplyDeleteyour picture and flash fiction are beautiful and go perfectly together. I liked how your perspective was to spread kindness, no matter what society says your personality is that you should always be kind and little by little change your personality for the better. Really good job! <3
ReplyDeleteI liked how you added detail for your flash fiction and i really liked your portrait and your artist statement about your portrait.
ReplyDeleteYour flash fiction was short, simple, and extremely meaningful. Your portrait and your flash fiction complement each other extremely well. I liked how you compared seeds of the flowers to the love that is much needed in today’s society. This is a great blog and a good read.
ReplyDeleteShelby:
ReplyDeleteYou focus on the exponential growth of kindness and the kind of influence that could potentially have in our world, on those we care about and on strangers. It makes me think of two things, both of which I think you may enjoy:
1) The film "Amelie"-- It's a French movie circa 2001 about a protagonist who decides to try to change the lives of the people around her for the better. After the film was released, there was a wave of random acts of kindness in Paris inspired by the story.
2) An Arabic proverb: "Do a good deed. Then throw it into the sea." It's a reminder that we shouldn't do good things with the expectation that we will get something back (from that person, from another person, from the universe, etc.).
Your strengths here in your clever and innovative organization. You have voice down in here, it sounds like you. Thanks for your reflections and creativity.
