Stay Focused
Flash Fiction
Everything
all goes away as fast as it came. You’ll never have the chance to do it again.
If you get one shot or one opportunity, take it because it may be the first and
last one, you’ll ever get. Be ready for what will be thrown your way have a
game plan with specific goals. You must stay focused and tune out any and all
of the outside noise you will hear. You have to be prepared for the worst and
for the best. Change will happen, and it has to happen because it will get you
ready for what is next. Don’t let yourself down and put yourself down either.
You hold the pen, no one else. Its your life, your story, and your name. How
will you carry yourself and let them know your name?
Artist Statement
In my picture you will see me
standing on the trap line shooting last March during the season for the school.
The picture to me shows my determination and how focused I am on what I do
while taking advantage of the opportunity to shoot for our trap team. The black
and white filters to me symbolize my experience and makes me think of how I was
when I first started shooting trap compared to how I am now. The black and
white also makes me think about how since I’m a senior now that I really have
to seize all opportunities thrown my way because it may be the last time, I
ever get to do it. Some won’t understand, and I don’t expect them to but its
more than just shooting a shotgun at a clay pigeon. I feel it shows my
personality because of the level of focus and concentration I have when I’m
shooting in practices or competitions.
My
flash fiction connects to this because it’s me saying this to myself in my
head. I talk about my opportunities and dedication to the sport. It’s also
about how my personality shows too by the amount of concentration and focus I
have in any situation. I don’t like to and I never want to put myself down but
sometimes you just can’t help it. I say how will I present myself in a way to
reflects my name and character in a good way.
Reflection
People say that perspectives is the
way you think about a text or something somebody has said. That your
personality is just some vague idea, but it is much more in depth and that bias
is just being one sided on all topics that there is no sort of in between.
People think this because they don’t take the time to actually think of what
they are talking about before they begin talking about a certain topic.
In the “How do we overcome bias? Walk boldly toward them.” TED Talk by Verna Meyers, she talks on how people use bias or how we may not even now we are being bias. For example, Meyers says, “Biases are stories we make up about people before we even know who they are.” She also said, “I leaned on a bias that I didn’t even know I had” which shows that even the experts in these particular situations didn’t know they were doing so until they thought about it more. It means we all more than likely do it without taking notice of it, we may think of it but after that we blow it off. The biases we hear about or think about we really don’t know were doing it until someone calls you out for it. She explains how you basically cant judge a book by its cover only in the sense that she is talking about people in society.
I agree with Verna Meyers that we
can’t just make up different stories about people and automatically have some
sort of bias toward that person. You have to meet that person first and they evaluate
after meeting them. I don’t prejudge or hold any sort of bias toward someone
before I meet someone, I meet them and try to get to know them. Not meet them
and have the mindset of thinking something about that individual and just not like
them. I didn’t really know that about myself until in class we took the
personality test and that was one of my traits was that I’m somewhat shy at first
but if you get to know me or if I open up to you that I’ll more likely talk to
you and don’t mind being around you.
Of the two and a half years I've known you, I never interpreted you as this type of personality. I understood that you liked to shoot for your team, but I didn't expect an emotional development behind it. I agree the your photo for how it does convey a lot of importance to the "carpe diem" concept. The darkness and faded grey give me a feeling I never received when we talked. I did know what type of personality you were, and your They say/I say proves that very much. You do take the time to get to know others (me an example). Glad I got to know more about you.
ReplyDeleteI really like your flash fiction because to me it relates to something like a motivational speech, telling the reader that they are in control of their own destiny, and to achieve their dreams they need to focus up. Personally, I should take this advice as I lose focus of what I want in life and instead procrastinate everything.
ReplyDeleteYour picture, and more importantly your explanation was my favorite part. I never would have looked at the black and white filter and thought about how much meaning it could carry. All shooters have to come a long way from when they started to their peak. they really are polar opposites.
ReplyDeleteI really liked your flash fiction and also your explanation was very good. I never would of looked at the picture and thought how much hidden meaning that a filter could have on a picture.
ReplyDeleteI love the way your flash fiction used the phrase "shoot your shot" and your portrait was you with a gun. I don't know if it was intentional but I thought it was a nice touch. I also find your words to be inspirational in my life and I can only imagine what other people felt when they read this! Very powerful indeed.
ReplyDeleteI really liked your flash fiction because I think many can relate to the subject mater it might not be about shooting though it could be about their own passion I think you did a good job of explaining why the pic is important in your artist statement.
ReplyDeleteI like your picture because it shows something you really enjoy and it relates to your overall topic. Your writings are easy to read along to and are very thought out.
