Flash Fiction:
Our adventures are limited
When we explore,
With our eyes shut
Artist Statement:
The picture within the outline of a person represents the adventure. I chose this image of me because I’m sitting on the edge of a graffiti covered, ruined wall, looking down on the train tracks that divide a highway and the forest. The journey to this location is an adventure on it’s own, walking for 10 minutes through tall grass and unclear paths. The outline of me is to represent a person, no one in particular. There’s a yellow streak over where my face would be on the outline. This points at the line in the flash fiction, “with our eyes shut”, because the streak is covering the eyes. The reason the image is a double exposure (a photo within another), is because the photo within the outline symbolizes the deeper inside feelings and actions of a person. The outline of the person making up the image symbolizes the person, in this case me. The outline doesn't have any distinct features to make out a specific person on purpose. Even though the inside image is of me, I wanted to make the outline as just a silhouette to say that this could be anyone.
They Say, I Say:
Over the past 8 weeks, we’ve come to learn a lot more about ourselves. Through different group activities, podcast listens, writing assignments, online quizzes, we’ve come to learn more about personality and what a bias is. They say that personality is not something that changes in a person. They can try and change who they are, but they’re always going to be that same person. Others argue that it’s possible to change your personality. Some people even view change as a negative, and deny it in all regards. This is because the saying "I've changed" is thrown around so often today.
Studies have been done over the human personalities, such as Freud's theory (Personalities - The Psychological Self). Freud concluded that everyone starts at the same level or stage of their personality development, and as they grow older they become more situated, some more than others. Jung's theory is the opposite of Freud's theory. Jung concluded that everyone is born the same and connected with one another. Last, Maslow's theory believes a person is constantly changing based around their environment. A person goes through different stages of their needs, such as self-actualization, esteem, safety needs.
I've learned a lot these past 8 weeks, and I've taken the knowledge I was given to form my own opinion/stance on the idea of personality changes. I'd say that people can change, but they have to take action or have a motive to do so. I believe this because I feel like I've changed who I am over the years. I'm completely different from who I was in elementary. I remember I used to be selfish, I always wanted to fit in and didn't want to be the underdog, I acted like a spoiled brat. I was and still am an introverted person. I always knew this was how I was, but after taking the personality quiz (16personalities.com) in class it confirmed my assumptions. Just in the past year I've stopped caring what people think of me or how I'm perceived. I started caring more about people on a deeper level, sympathizing for people more, putting myself last. I had a motive going into my last two years of high school to better myself as a human.
This picture is dope! I really liked you you just expressed yourself and related your actions back your portrait. I also have learned a lot more about myself over the weeks about personality and just how we see things in general so I can really relate to that, this was very good.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really cool flash fiction and portrait! How does your flash fiction describe your personality as a whole? And what made you choose such a short flash fiction versus a long one?
ReplyDeleteI love how you explained the actual journey behind the photo; it added more to the story that you already told in your flash fiction! I'm just curious but is there a reason why the streak over your eyes is yellow?
ReplyDeleteEven though your flash fiction is short I think it says a lot and makes sense. I like how in your picture you have yourself sitting in a wall and then a lighter part of yourself in the back. There was a lot of meaning behind your picture and it was interesting to read about your perspective on it.
ReplyDeleteI think that you made a good decision by having a short piece of writing, because the picture fits it so well. I like how they both incorporate each other nicely.
ReplyDeleteI really like your picture and how it connects with your flash fiction. I can relate to this because me and my friends always go on adventures.
ReplyDeleteI really like how even though your flash fiction is short it has a lot of meaning and everyone can take it a different way.
ReplyDeleteI think the self-portrait you used is really cool and your artist statement has a lot of detail but is still kept short and to the point. Good job!
ReplyDeleteAfter all the adventures we've been on together, I really can see how your flash fiction and portrait relate to you and your personality.
ReplyDeleteI really like your picture and its easy for people to see how it connects to your flash fiction. Also your artist statement shows a lot of detail and your reflection was really good too.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed how the flash fiction went together with the picture, even though it was short it still had meaning and could be interpreted in a couple different ways depending on how you look at it
ReplyDeleteYou had a HUGE message with just your photo. Then adding your flash fiction made it come alive more, and then the artist statement added the back up behind it. Honestly I loved this piece because it got me interested. You covered every detail in this photo and I'm not leaving with any questions. Amazing piece!
ReplyDeleteyou are picture look cool and I enjoy reading your flash fiction. your flash fiction is short but it has lot of information and good meaning.
ReplyDeleteSeeing how thoughtful you were with your photo and artist statement connecting your photo to your flash fiction was amazing. They both defend each other and connect together amazingly. In your they say I say, I thought it was interesting how in the second paragraph you say how personality has been argued, then in your I say you give your thoughts, I just loved how it was put and how it changes the writing a little bit.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your flash fiction; it is very well written. Short, but thought-provoking. I also liked the double exposure on the image and the way that it tied in so well with your flash fiction.
ReplyDeleteYour portrait relates very well with your over all message and is very cool looking. I like how it is edited because it gives the viewer a sense of meaning to each thing that is pointed out. Your flash fiction is short but it has a lot of meaning and is very relatable to your other writings and other peoples lives.
ReplyDeleteThe image made me felt like you were almost trapped inside yourself, but you had a different description of what the silhouette meant and it still made sense. Is there a meaning behind the color of the streak over your eyes? I like how your image and flash fiction connected in such a unique way. It was almost like there was more story told in the image than in the story.
ReplyDeleteThe photo you chose is very well edited and looks really cool. I like how the they say/ I say is really deep and has meaning to it, how you said that you changed as a person. Very professional writing.
ReplyDeleteThe actual self portrait photo is very well thought out and planned. It looks like a lot of time was spent on it. The flash fiction is what grabbed my attention to your work the most. I liked the message behind it and how it makes you think a little deeper. I also like the capitalization and punctuation you used.
ReplyDeleteYour picture is really cool and interesting. Your artist statement shows all of your meaning with your picture and flash fiction that I wouldn't of been able to recognize if you didn't explain it. There is a lot of cool stuff in this piece.
ReplyDeletei love how detailed and unique your self portrait is. it grabs your attention but also holds it there because there's lots of elements to look at. I also liked how you made the outline the adventure itself; it puts a twist on it and makes you think more about the deeper meaning. The writing part was easy to follow and worded well too:)
ReplyDeleteyour portrait is really well done and detailed. I like the edits applied and how it all connects with the flash fiction. in the flash fiction you said how the eyes are closed and in the bigger outline of you, the eyes are covered in yellow. that I don't know if it was intentional but I made that connection. love our work!
ReplyDeleteI really like how your flash fiction was short, but it was really creative. Your portrait is really cool and the edits are amazing. Your flash fiction and portrait go really well together.
ReplyDeleteI liked your portrait and everything about this peace it is very well put together.
